about

Doula, the Copenhagen five-piece, have completed their debut album
‘Constantly Repeating’, which offers a journey into the ironic contrast
between humour and morbidity.

‘Constantly Repeating’, produced by Brian Batz (Sleep Party People) and multi-grammy award winning producer and mix engineer, Eduardo De La Paz (Arcade Fire, New Order). This debut album follows on from their 2019 EP ‘Failure to Thrive’, which despite the pandemic putting their ascension on hold, led to the band playing numerous festivals, such as By:Larm in Norway.

Doula utilised the lockdown to fine-tune their upcoming album ‘Constantly Repeating’--intensifying the emphatic new wave sound with dark fervour and obfuscating the moral nuances of the stories relayed by the group’s frontman, Frederik Gøtzsche. Channeling aspects of his own medical background, Gøtzsche’s lyrics involve struggling characters such as addicts, serial killers, and people caught in a quagmire. Instead of deeming them unfit for society, Doula casts an empathetic light on these outcasts trying (and failing) to reform themselves. Stories of lobotomised murderers and a character absorbed by his virtual life in a video game, Gøtzsche applies an amusing twist to these grim tales, laced with energetic hooks to the accompanying music.

“The characters are developed from personal concepts that are exaggerated to a point that still resonates with reality. The audience has the ability to form these individuals as they see fit without having them impose any virtues on the listener”. (Gøtzsche)

The first offering will land in the shape of single ‘Good Boy’ released on the 1st October 2021 via Phlexx Records. The song reflects the struggles of living in a digital age, where keyboard warriors hide behind their screen and find no shame in assessing a situation outside of their physical realm and offer only hateful remarks and false accusations. An environment where we’ve dissociated ourselves from others, that we no longer have a grasp of what empathy really is. ‘Good Boy’ is an anthem for those who have been victimised by these antagonisers that patrol the online space. It’s a song that encourages a defiant attitude against the dogmatic. Inspired by bands like Orange Juice, Depeche Mode, and MC Hammer, the bustling song keeps its humour and enthusiasm, while addressing a fundamental flaw in our society today.

The ‘Good Boy’ video is shot and directed by David Henry Gerson
a filmmaker whose work has won prizes from the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences, and the Sundance Film Festival. With an all-star cast featuring actors such as Stanley B. Herman (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and Zodiac), Bobby Mcgee (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Meteor Man and ER) Lilliya Scarlet Reid (Chambers), the ‘Good Boy’ music video is of one of such lost 70’s thrillers - a world that focuses on underdogs rising up in a corrupt system. We’ve taken a loose Romeo and Juliet story, adapted it to 1978 Los Angeles, and mixed in a corrupt Capulet family by the pool, immigration lawyers downtown, spies, planes, boats, and B-Boys. It’s an anthem of rising up, fighting against the odds of a wayward world.
